How to Submit

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Complete our online form, upload your work, and pay your entry fee on our secure site. Your PayPal receipt is your confirmation of submission.

Only original, unpublished manuscripts may be entered.

Submissions for the 2017 Novel contest are due September 30, 2017. Submissions for the 2017 Short Story and Poetry contests are due November 30, 2017. Entries must include cover sheet with your contact information and you must complete payment for each submission. Your PayPal receipt is your confirmation of submission.

Each entry should be one file (PDF, DOC, DOCX, or TXT) and include cover sheet information:  title, author’s name, address, telephone number, email address, and category entered (short story, novel, or poetry). Entries must be typed, double spaced (short story and novel only). WordPerfect or other applications will not be accepted.

Please name your file with the title of the work, your name, or other unique file name. Entries titled “Draft,” “Hackney Submission,” or the like may not be identified as your work.

Submissions from Alabama will be entered into the state poetry and short story contests, unless the author specifies the entry for the national competition. Stories and poems will only be entered in one category, either NATIONAL or STATE, not both. The same submission fees apply to the Alabama contests.

Multiple entries must be submitted separately by deadline dates. Manuscripts will not be returned.

Online entries must be accompanied by submission fee. (U.S. Funds only will be accepted.) Please use our secure online checkout to submit entry fee with your uploaded entry. Unpaid submissions will be discarded before judging.

Novel:  Length is open but the novel must be unpublished. Publication rights revert to winner. Entry fee: $30.00 per entry (U.S.$ only). Must be received (or postmarked) by September 30, 2017.

Short Story:  Length not to exceed 5,000 words per story. Entry fee is $20.00 per entry (U.S.$ only). Must be received (or postmarked) by November 30, 2017.

Poetry:  Length not to exceed 50 lines per entry. More than one poem may be submitted, but all poems together must not exceed the 50-line limit per entry. Entry fee is $15.00 per entry (U.S. Funds only).  Must be received (or postmarked) by November 30, 2017.

*If you are unable to enter or pay online, you may mail a printed copy or a disc containing your work accompanied by your submission fee. Make checks payable to Hackney Literary Awards. Mail to 4650 Old Looney Mill Road, Birmingham, AL 35243. A $30.00 processing fee will be charged for any returned check.
